Description

This three-day trip can be made from Pampa Linda to Frias Lake and Puerto Blest or in the opposite way. In its route we will spend two nights in two deferent’s mountain huts “Otto Meiling” and “Agostino Rocca”, and we will connect them hiking by the beautiful "Alerce Glacier". In this adventure we are going to enjoy Mt. Tronador with its imposing glacial landscape, the “Valdivian jungle” and the blue peaceful waters of “Nahuel Huapi Lake".

Day 1

Departure from Bariloche to Pampa Linda (2.5 hours trip). We ascents to the Meiling Hut by the normal trail through a beautiful “notofagus” trees and Coihues forest. The trail goes up fast when the switch-backs begins and then we reach a nice ridge with stunning views of Tronador mountain, his glaciers and waterfalls. The Otto Meiling hut from this point is two hours away. Distance and estimated time: 12 km / 4-6 hours.

Day 2

After spending the night in the “Otto Meiling Refuge”, we will wear all the “glacier gear” and descend the path for about 50 meters, after crossing a rocky area we will enter inside the “Alerce Glacier”. We will rope up in this point to cross the glacier full of crevasses and connect with the “Paso de las nubes” where is the “Agostino Rocca Hut”, our objective for that day. Once we get the hut we only need to relax and enjoy the view of the green “Frias Valley” and in the end, the “Frias Lake” the last point of our three-day adventure. Distance and estimated time: 6 km / 4-5 hours.

Day 3

After spending the night in the “Agostino Rocca Refuge”, we will descend the path for about 300 meters, after crossing a rocky area we will enter inside the forest again and begin to walk the trail that goes along the east bank of the “Frias River”, we continue walking for about 3 hours until we cross the “Frias river”, and then we continue for a mile and a half until we reach the southern cost of “Frias Lake”. In this point we are next to one of the many borders between Argentina and Chile. Here we need to take a boat to cross “Frias Lake”, and then a bus to conect with west cost of the “Nahuel Huapi Lake” in “Blest Port”, where a bigger boat will take us to “Pañuelo Port” in “Bariloche City”. Distance and estimated time: 10 km / 5-7 hours.
